Supporting British Values at Castle View School

British Value Statement – Castle View School is committed to serving its community, the local area and globally. We recognise the multi-cultural, multi-faith and multi-ethnic nature of both of the United Kingdom and our school and seek to promote harmony and the British values to all.

Mutual Respect

An understanding of the importance of identifying and combatting discrimination.

• Promoted through the school values and ethos policy.
• Our Personal Development, Tutor and Assembly programme cover the teaching of British values and mutual respect.
• We have an anti-bullying and student leadership team combined with an excellent faculty of staff who promote an attitude of equality, fairness and respect.
• Constant promotion of respect for others and good manners across the school through classroom and learning environments as well as extra-curricular activities such as sports.
• Effective anti-bullying and E-safety policy.
• Fundraising and supporting a variety of charities.
• Links with our local community.
• Building strong links with other schools.

Individual Liberty

An understanding that the freedom to choose and hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law.

• Students are encouraged to make choices within a safe and supportive environment.
• Through a range of Student Voice and other opportunities, students are given freedom to make choices.
• Students have key roles and responsibilities e.g. student leadership team.
• Students are encouraged to see themselves as unique individuals able to make a unique contribution to our community.
• All pupils are encouraged to participate in all school activities.
• Our Philosophy and Ethics Curriculum looks at a range of beliefs and faiths.

Democracy

An understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process.

• The student and staff leadership teams meet and adhere to democratic process.
• All students are involved in the democratic process through the electing of form reps.
• Student voice feedback is a key element on moving the school forward.
• Whole school curriculum enables pupils to develop an understand of democratic policies e.g. Personal Development, History.

Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

An acceptance that other people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having one) should be accepted and tolerated, and should not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour.

• Our Philosophy and Ethics curriculum provides a broad and balanced education looking at a range of faiths, religions and cultures.
• SMSC (social, moral, spiritual and cultural) and British values are taught as both a discreet subject and through form tutors, assembly and the wider curriculum.

The Rule of Law

An appreciation that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens and is essential for their well being and safety.

• Our school values, classroom expectations and code of conduct provide a clear ethos and high level of expectation.
• Behaviour incidents and rewards are reviewed regularly and shared with all parties.
• Students have opportunities to take part in a variety of workshops, both as individuals or as a cohort.
• Targeted teaching within Personal Development lessons.
• Visits by local officials e.g. Fire Service, Police.
